Forest Photos

Haven't done anything madly exciting that I don't do everyday lately so I thought I'd just post some photos I've taken over the past week or so.

This is a Black-legged Golden Orb web-spider I saw out in the forest. Similar to the red-legged one I was talking about before.
The flies are so irritating. They go for all the mosquito bites for some reason. Not pleasant when you remember a fly vomits everytime it lands.
One of the centipedes I mentioned before. Most of them are venomous as far as I know.
These cats were hissing at each other for like 20 minutes. Stood there for ages waiting for the fight.
 Some sorta bug thingy.
This is the view just after you climb down the ladder leading to the shelf.
Andrea pretending to fall over just before she actually fell over.
 Fergus: Action Hero

I thought this hermit crab's shell looked kinda like leopard spots or something.
 Pierette & Pippa

 Mel & Jordan
Pierette & I beat Mel & Kristyan in pool
 eh.. yeah...
 Pete
 Pippa
 Pete & Mel
Mel & Kristyan were sad because it was their last day in Shimoni. Pete was happy.
 Then he got sad.

I'm still not sure why they were laughing.

I actually died in a plane crash on the way to Kenya.
I've seen a few giant snails in the past week. Dunno how the size looks in the photo but they're about the size of your fist.
Found a baby female red-legged golden orb web spider living in the common area. It's since lost two of its legs! :( It's still alive but I think the geckos living in the house will get her eventually.
 Debrief everyday @ 6.30
One of the billions of bugs they have living in the staff bathroom.
This little guy looked like he had been half eaten by something or other.
Matata listened to a Bob Marley song and now won't stop talking in a rastafarian accent.
Just down the road. Spies everywhere.
Loads of ants gathered around some weird organ-looking thing.
Been checking in on that RLGOW spider whenever we go down the west road. Seems to be getting bigger.
There's an argurment over what kind of toad this is. It's either a Flat-backed toad or a Guttural Toad. Guttural toads can be poisonous I think.
Some really cool bug that was in the house a few days ago.
Army of somethings that was marching over the forest and up a massive tree into a nest. Not sure what they are. They don't look like ants.
Loads of cool looking mushrooms grow around the area.
An evil galago that lives in the forest just behind Smuggler's. Smuggler's is the pub we go to sometimes if I haven't already said that.

 Bug on leaf
A couple of those bugs I was talking about that are always mating. Think this lot might be their babies.
We found this snake that had had its head run over by a motorbike.
They want to skin it I think. They collect things like that for identification catalogues. The office is filled with skulls and other bones of sykes, colobus, suni, and loads of other things.
Spider we saw on the night walk the other night. Not sure exactly what type but I think it's a form of Huntsman spider.

We also saw a scorpion on the night survey. The rule is the smaller they are the more venomous. This one was tiny. But the ones without pincers are even worse I hear so I don't think it was that venomous.
Moth with really cool markings that was in the indoor shower the other day.
Second set of giant millipedes we've caught mating and/or fighting.
Got an awesome shot of a dragonfly which I've been trying to get since I got here.
Caught this tiny bug destroying the massive grasshopper. The hoppers abdomen was moving like it was breathing so whatever venom the insect must have used must have paralysed it.
Found this tiiiiiiny egg in the forest. No idea what species it is.
I don't know if I've mentioned these furry caterpillars before. Their hairs stick in you if you touch them and they can itch horribly for days.
Sea snail I picked out of the water at the shelf today.

More mushrooms.
I was trying to get a shot of the African golden oriole (the golden one on the left) when I accidentally got a picture of the bird on the right aswell. It's a turaco which are appearantly hard to spot.

This is a southern-banded snake eagle which was perched outside the house. Their numbers are declining and they're on the near-threatened list of endargered animals so it was cool to get a shot of two of them mating just outside the house. Hopefully a good sign.

A better shot of an african golden oriole.

Literally as I was writing all this I was called outside with the camera to get some shots of these colobus. They're never ever seen on the ground so it was awesome to get photos of it.

They're the best pictures I have at the moment. I'll try not to leave it so long between posts but I don't get a chance too often to do it because it's so busy.
I'm going snorkling tomorrow in a marine reserve on the other side of Wasini island called Kisite National Park. I've borrowed a friends underwater camera so hopefully I'll get loadsa cool photos. They saw 7 humpback whales during the week so I might even get to see them or maybe some dolphins. Talk to ya'll soon.

  2. So true Kev! What you need is a nice rolled up Irish Times for those bugs! Had to get rid of a wasps nest in Woodbrook the other day- very satisfying; a good wasp is a dead wasp in my book. A buddhist I shall never be! However, great photos and beautiful insects as long as they're not crawling up me legs. Don't bring any 'pets' home!! xx ter
