Whales etc.

Dedication

Dedicated to my good friend Ruth, who made me write this post.

Thanks, Ruth!

Whales

We got a call the other day at like 7.30 from the marine volunteers in Mkwiro (who were already out on the boat) that they'd sighted a whale swimming in the channel which would have been amaing to see.
We went down to the reef to see if we could get a look.

We didn't see anything in the end but we got to skip off work for an hour! The marine guys followed it for 4 hours and identified it as a minke whale.
I got bored and took a picture of the sky!

Bugs

All these really cool bugs keep getting into the house. Andrea, who's on FOREST for the next two weeks, is terrified of grasshoppers and all other grasshopper-like creatures and runs away when anything comes close. It's brilliant!

Is it just me or is he smilimg for the camera!

Sykes

Managed to get really upclose to a sykes monkey on the way back from the forest on Friday!

People

Some photos I've taken of some of the other volunteers/staff!
Cara - Cara arrived at the same time as me. She's from somewhere in Ozland and left at the end of last week. She was on the Health Project while she was here.
JoAnna - From a town just outside a Detroit, Michigan. Pretty much the same story as Cara. Left last week aswell.
Jack "Jack Jack Attack" Vukovic - Also from Australia. My current roommate was here 6 weeks before I arrived and is leaving the same time as me.
 JoAnna
 Cara
 Cara
Matata - One of the Health Staff members, half American and half Ivorian. She's been here almost a year, I think.
Kopa - Health Staff. Full Name: Kopa Kabana. Kopa's from Kenya but dreams to one day become a special agent in the FBI. If he can pass the psyche test.
Andy & Georgia - Both from the UK, Andy's from somewhere close to Farnham appearantly. She started on the forest program at the same time as me after doing 2 weeks of marine. Georgia's forest staff and has been here for the last 6 months. She left yesterday to go back to England and ride horses or something.
 Jack
Kristyan - Another Aussie, who arrived 3 weeks ago, she's in Mkwiro on the island working on the construction project but she's spent a few days here repainting Shimoni primary.
 Mel & Kristyan
Natalie & Andrew - Natalie's from Liverpool currently working on the Teaching project in Mkwiro. Andrew's Canadian and into all that science garbage like me. He's on forest for the next few weeks aswell.
 Kopa
 Kopa
Pete & Mel - Arrived the same time as me, they're "just friends" who met in uni in scotland. Pete's from glasgow and mel's from... somewhere else. They both work marine over on the island.
Polyn & Shelbi - Polyn's a native kenyan who's on the forest project with me at the moment, and Shelbi's American working on the island.
Sara & Polyn - Sara just left gvi for a while as far as I know so I didn't get much of a chance to meet her. She does have a Tanzanian stalker who wants to marry her on Mkwiro appearantly though.
 Matata
Justina - Just arrived with the new volunteers a week ago. Originally from Poland, she's living in the UK and working on the Health project in Shimoni.
Fergus - Another new volunteer, from scotland, working with me on the forest project at the moment. He's doing a combination so after forest he'll be going to work on other projects.
Andrea - From Lebanon, Andrea's aslo doing a combination and is on the forest project at the moment. She's terrified of grasshoppers and grasshopper-like creatures which brings me endless enjoyment! :D
 Fergus, Andrea, & Justina
Pierrette - New volunteer in Mkwiro from, obviously, Austrailia. She and Pippa are friends from home. Mkwiro volunteers usually spend the weekend off base in Shimoni base or elsewhere so she and the other new Mkwiro arrivals were over this weekend.
Pippa (Madam Trashcan) & Oliver - New Mkwiro peeps. Oliver's from somewhere in the UK as far as I know. Pippa had a similar experience to me in the teaching area. While she thought her class was going really well it turned out "pippa" means trashcan in Swahili and the kids had been making fun of her the entire time. The new italian volunteers then informed her of some other translations of "pippa" which I won't post here.
Sophie - Sophie's senior staff (meaning she gets paid) here in Shimoni. She lives down in the cottage in Shimoni Reef rather than on the base. She takes care of all the admin stuff.

Continuous Shot

I'm not sure how this will work on Blogspot but if you scroll through these at the right speed they're pretty good!
